At the origin of the initiative…

Fully aware of the stake of grouping, structuring and providing access to knowledge and tools on this subject, French Cooperation called on the “Land and Development” Technical Committee, a reflection and exchange group that had for 10 years involved specialists from diverse disciplines and with diverse skills, to reflect on the creation of a site that brings together, showcases, and inspires the supply of information available on Internet.

Under the auspices of this Committee, several surveys and studies were conducted with organisations involved in the field of land tenure. They confirmed, with these organisations, the relevance of undertaking this portal project in the form of a system co-managed by several partners.
Its launch was made possible thanks to financing from the mobilising project “Appui à l’élaboration des politiques foncières” (support for the elaboration of land tenure policies) financed for 3 years by the French Development Agency to contribute to elaborating land tenure and renewable resource management policies that provide land tenure security to populations while fostering efficient use of land, social peace, and poverty alleviation.

Because of its origins and the institutional framework from which it grew, the portal is today predominantly focused on rural aspects and African countries. It aims, however, to progressively break with traditionally sectoral approaches, move beyond the rural/urban divide, and provide access to information on land tenure as a central element in public policies. It also has the vocation of, in time, providing information on a vast majority of countries where land tenure issues are acute.

We are counting on your opinions and participation to make this portal a true platform to exchange and pool information on the sector.
